Whats the min Java VM on Debian 7 i386 (VPS)

Beitragvon smokingwheels » Di Sep 30, 2014 10:19 am

My VPS server keeps crashing the user interface.
I have JVM now set to 512 mb now instead of 600 mb.
My low end VPS has 768 mb in total.

How much memory does Debian 7 i386 need after awhile?
What will Yacy's JVM run down to?

Hello,

you should configure enough Swap-Space, at least 512 MByte.
In Situations the System needs temporary more RAM it can swap out currently unused RAM-Pages.
Background Services, as updates of the software package index, can use a lot of RAM for a short time.
I know, swapping can massively degrade the system performance, but a system crash degrades the performance even more.

Greetings

Thanks Erik
I configured a 1 GB SWAP file it is not turned on by Default.
I resumed 600 mb for JVM and will leave running and give it a hard time again.

Just for other persons trying to install YaCy on low end VPS with Debian 7 i386 32 bit.

Here is the commands I used to setup YaCy on VPS.

root
password
cd /var
touch swap.img
chmod 600 swap.img
dd if=/dev/zero of=/var/swap.img bs=1024k count=1000
mkswap /var/swap.img
swapon /var/swap.img
echo "/var/swap.img none swap sw 0 0" >> /etc/fstab

YaCy Setup

echo 'deb http://debian.yacy.net ./' > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/yacy.list
wget http://debian.yacy.net/yacy_orbiter_key.asc -O- | apt-key add -
apt-get update
apt-get install openjdk-7-jre
apt-get install yacy

Hello,

for automatic use of swap files you should add it to the /etc/fstab
Do not configure too much RAM for the Java-VM, Java gives unused RAM never back to the Operating System, even after running the GC.

Hi
Is the /etc/fstab for hdd sections?
I only have a one virtual hdd at time of install no control unless I add some startup script, not about to do that.
I have a virtual machine in the cloud (VPS).

Ok I read a little further on the web page and you need execute the swap settings at boot as Erik told me.
echo "/var/swap.img none swap sw 0 0" >> /etc/fstab
I will admit Im a windows user.

Cheers

Greg
