Yacy is too complex

Beitragvon bubul » Mo Okt 24, 2016 12:13 pm

I've tried to use yacy, but first it's too difficult for simple users !

And there's a lot of problems, i've tried first on a computer with 3gb of memory, celeron 900ghz windows 7 and always memory problem, after sometimes less than one hour it stop saying no enough memory but the problem was the same when i allocate 1500 gb of memory ! And last problem, it doesn't want to start, it start, java is started but i never can load it in navigator !

I've tried with another computer aspire v3 731g windows 8, with 6gb if memory and problem is the same, it seem it work good only when i allocate 3gb of memory. But if often cause problem when i use computer with yacy working, computer disk is too often used by yacy and its slow all system, i've tried to reduce priority of java to minimum but it the same problem ! And the same problem than before, i've tried to activate a dictionnary and now it never lauch, i see yacy in status bar bur the navigator interface never load...

And i' dont find an option to limit the use of internet connexion (like 20mb max), my connexion is 30mb.

There's a lot of problems, i've tried to install it on a unbuntu and with last java 8 it said me an error in crawler, a java exception so it can't open url ?

I've tried yacy on different computer and here what i think about it (i'm yacy peers bubul and bubul2) :

I've tried on two computers:

- I cant run yacy with less than 3gb of memory, if less, it stop a few hours later saying no enough memory, with 3gb it can run without problem multiples days.

- I can use the computer to go to internet, look at video only with the computer windows 7 (celeron 900, 3gb ram) because i've installed a ssd disk and i've installed yacy on the 160gb old disk connect via usb, before that, i can't use the computer at the same time than yacy run

- On another, i can't use computer even yacy is on another usb data disk (2To, 1To free), it slow all the computer, even with minimal priority, the computer is a aspire v3 731 g (6gb) and java is accelerated via graphic card computer but it seem it the high usage of the disk by yacy wich slow too much the computer.

A good idea will be a version of yacy but without using too much ressource of the computer, because if users can't use their computer with yacy on it, they will don't use yacy, faroo, another p2p search engine dont seem to have this problem.

Hello bubul,
can you give some complementary details about your typical use case : type of active local crawls, blacklists, dictionaries... ?
As far as I know some users are running YaCy on a Raspberry Pi, and personally I have been running a peer on a virtual machine with 600Mb RAM 7 days a week from the beginning of this year without too many problems. But I admit I experienced crashes when activating geolocalized data or advanced blacklist filtering... And also, to manage disk usage I have configured scheduled tasks to regularly clean old data from my index...
I agree YaCy can be confusing if you are not really technical. By the way it can be easier to improve performances if one can reproduce your typical use case and the related issues, so to my mind any supplementary useful information on your usage could help.

Best regards
luc

I assume you're already aware of this, but for anyone else reading this thread, Wikipedia says FAROO isn't free software. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FAROO

Yes, it's not the same concept than yacy but i talk about software for people using yacy not on a server but on windows desktop.

There is a limitation of Java maximum heap size will range ~1.4G on 32-bit machines if that is your case.
